Adam Starkie from Collective LoveMusic on Mouthpiece 37:

“Erin Gee is a singer and a composer and she started a series of pieces called Mouthpieces. Mouthpiece I was actually a solo piece written for herself. [The series] is about using vocal sounds that aren’t attached to language in any way, and what’s interesting is, according to the language that you might happen to speak, sometimes you think you hear words you don’t hear. In the piece that we’ve commissioned, Mouthpiece 37, Erin gives vocal sounds and utterances to all the musicians in the ensemble. When we worked with her, she said that the goal of this septet is basically [to form] one big mouth—so the seven musicians form one mouth and all of these crazy sounds are coming out of it.”
